This September, Creative Hands is honored to deepen our craft through immersive training in the age-old art of Tsakonian Weaving, at Tsakonika Ifanta.
What is Tsakonian Weaving?
A heritage art: Tsakonian weaving traces its roots to the 19th century, introduced in the region via that rich cultural exchange with Asia Minor.
Distinctive technique: Created on a vertical (upright) loom, the resulting textiles are woven as continuous, seamless pieces—making them exceptionally durable and beautifully straightforward in their design.
Cultural legacy: This style of weaving not only persisted as a craft but became a living emblem of the Tsakonian identity—a dialect, community, and art form all inextricably intertwined.
What Our Team is Learning
Under the expert guidance of Elisavet Rodopoulou—a third-generation weaver preserving her family’s heritage—our team is engaging in hands-on instruction that includes:
Warping techniques and loom setup
Crafting traditional geometric patterns on tabletop looms using local materials
Every step rooted in the deep tradition of Tsakonian craftsmanship
This training isn’t just about technique—it’s about embracing a connection to a living tradition.
Why It Matters to Creative Hands
Preserving heritage – By learning and lifting this tradition, we help ensure it continues to live and evolve.
Deepening our artistry – These techniques enrich our textile vocabulary and inspire more meaningful creations.
